An indestructible longing for the marvellous
This book is a series of meetings told in the manner of an autobiography but also a critical reading of art, as in those with Gino De Dominicis, Ettore Spalletti, Anselm Kiefer, Ed Ruscha and many more. There are numerous revelations about the hidden workings of the art world, about gallery life (including a good-humoured blag by Lia Rumma that is worthy of Neapolitan comedy) and about continual discoveries. It is the story of the collector Gemma Testa, who as a young woman arrives in Milan during the economic miracle of the 1960s, the Derby and the fashion boom. She moves to the Turin of the Post-Informal Neo-avantgardes, the city of Arte Povera and legendary gallerists such as Tazzoli, Sperone and Pistoi. It is the biography of a woman passionately in love with contemporary art who has looked for artists who can decipher our history (Kiefer, Kentridge), or show visionary energy (De Dominicis), or dialogue with the great art of the Renaissance (Spalletti). She also values art that denounces, such as the works of the Afro-American artist Kara Walker. This book is the confirmation that, in contrast with the pragmatism governing the art scene today, an indestructible longing for the marvellous can survive.
