Synopsis

A century of our history through the photographic masterpieces gathered by a great collector

One of the most important collections of Italian post-war photography in the world. The volume is introduced by a long conversation between the collector and Walter Guadagnini, in which Bertero relates not just how his collection started, but also speaks of his passions, the cultural climate in which he grew up, the encounters with past and present masters of photography. The images - over 250 - that are included in the volume are accompanied by brief texts that provide further suggestions and keys to decoding a vast material, which ranges from momentous events to daily life, from faces to places, from Italy to the world. The collection contains some of the most important names in world photography after World War II, from Robert Capa to David Seymour and William Klein, as well as the main exponents of Italian photography, starting with the neo-realist masters all the way to the representatives of the Italian landscape school of the 1980s, from Patellani to Ghirri, Giacomelli to Basilico, Secchiaroli to Carmi, to name but a few of the over 120 photographers in the volume.
