Synopsis
One of Rembrandt’s most outstanding paintings, his “Self-portrait as St Paul”, 1661, has returned to the Palazzo Colonna from which it was audaciously sold, under the nose of the unwitting Prince Colonna, during the French occupation of Rome in 1799. This catalogue puts the painting in the context of the rich collection of Rembrandt etchings acquired by the Corsini in the 18th and 19th centuries. Giovanna Capitelli writes about the dispersal of Roman works of art during this period; Alessandro Cosma tells how paintings were sold from the collection; Ebe Antetomaso explains the origins and evolution of the Colonna Rembrandt collection, while Jonathan Bikker and Alessandro Cosma have contributed essays on the self-portrait itself.
