Synopsis
Maiolica in the pure Louis XIV style
The decorative arts, including the elegant maiolica produced at the end of the 17th century in the workshop of Carlo Antonio Grue, responded sensitively to the dynamics of contemporary events and fine art. The Accademia dell’Arcadia, founded on 5 October 1690, was a literary society that held lively theoretical discussions but also constituted a social network that influenced the choice of artists. With an eye to getting commissions from its members, Grue launched a “luxury line”, with new models, decorative schemes and modern narrative scenes. These rare and expensive pieces are considered by collectors to be among the most beautiful Italian maiolica ever made.
