De Chirico's early work can be divided into distinct phases, styles, subjects, iconography and poetic themes, which allows each volume to be effectively a monograph that stands up in its own right. Volume one, “The late romantic and early metaphysical works”, includes all the paintings and drawings from autumn 1908 to February 1919, and all the revivals, copies and variations of the metaphysical theme (about 70 works) documented to the period 1922-43. Volumes two to six cover February 1919 to autumn 1943 and catalogue around 1200 paintings documented to the inter-war years.Detailed reasons are given for the dating of the works, each of which is also discussed from the iconographic and stylistic point of view. These volumes are the most complete and up to date treatment of this mysterious and enigmatic artist, whose creative and intellectual story is one of the most gripping and important of the twentieth century.
