The magnificence of Palazzo Colonna photographed by Massimo Listri

“The superb gallery, perhaps even more beautiful than that of Versailles, and filled with delightful pictures, is supported by immense columns of ancient yellow marble, which divide the gallery into two at the ends; the king's gallery is longer and more ornate, but it is also more august. It is quite a remarkable thing, and has almost no equal, not even in Rome; the ceiling depicts the victories of Don John of Austria and of Prince Colonna, commander of the Catholic armada, at the Battle of Lepanto; the walls are adorned with a large number of valuable paintings (...).” This was the how the erudite Charles de Brosses in the 18th century described the most sumptuous and imposing of the Roman palaces, inhabited for seven hundred years by the same family for which it is named.
