A masterpiece of Christian art of great religious, historic and artistic importance

The eastern span of the Theodorian mosaic of the south hall of the Basilica of Aquileia is entirely given over to the episodes of the famous Biblical story of Jonas. Surrounded by marine (octopuses, dolphins, cuttlefish, etc.) and aquatic species (ducks), brought to life with fishing scenes, the magnificent work portrays the three episodes of the Old Testament saga: thrown overboard from a boat and swallowed by a marine monster; regurgitated three days later and resting under a pumpkin tree. An allegory for the resurrection of Christ and of the celestial rewards awaiting the baptised.“The extraordinary sequence of images in Aquileia could be construed just as the depiction in mosaic form of the story of the prophet Jonas: in actual fact, it is a true Old Testament parable that left its mark in Christian art from the very start” (GIANFRANCO RAVASI)
