The contemporary neo-classicist who defied the avantgarde
Carlo Maria Mariani has lived and worked in New York for decades: after a difficult beginning, after initially working on sacred art in the 1960s, he returned to classical themes in the 1970s, to what is “more real than real”, to hyperrealism and then to the final affirmation of a figurative style, drawing inspiration from classical themes and rules. A style that “is not technical complaisance, or a form of sterile intellectualism, but is born, at the end of the 1970s, as a challenge to the avantgarde”, which had become academic, self-referential and conformist. In the world capital of avantgarde conceptualism, Mariani therefore chooses to become the artist/symbol of essentially intellectual art that reaffirms the ever current values of classical painting.
