Is this Naples' most famous palazzo? This is the first book entirely dedicated to one of the few Neapolitan buildings that became one of the symbols of the city. Construction started in 1640 on the initiative of Anna Carafa and her husband, the Spanish viceroy of Naples Don Ramiro Guzman, but was never finished. The baroque, semi-ruined building soon became a popular subject of iconography for Neapolitan and foreign artists. The many British travellers who were fascinated by it included Lord Bute who, shortly after his resignation as prime minister, commissioned a survey of the palazzo, reproduced here for the first time. Authoritative scholars and enthusiasts have recomposed the many historic, human, and artistic events that have made this site iconic. The book features numerous illustrations and vintage photographs, along with the original contribution of drawings by artists including William Kentridge and Anselm Kiefer and contemporary photographers.
