Pasolini at Matera, as told by an exhibition
When making his movie about the Gospels, Pier Paolo Pasolini filmed the most important scenes in Matera, in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. The ancient history and deep roots of this haunting, cliffside town so similar to parts of Palestine, made a deep impression on Pasolini, one of the greatest intellectuals of 20th-century Italy, and his masterpiece changed its image and its destiny. From being considered an epitome of the primitive degradation of the peasant class, it is now a Unesco World Heritage Site and was European Capital of Culture in 2019 due to the extraordinary harmony between its natural and man-made landscape, which Pasolini revealed in the movie. This book documents the 2014 exhibition in Matera about the 50th anniversary of Pasolini’s masterpiece, which reconstructed how his movie was made, as well as its relationship with figurative art and the new techniques of image-creation that are such a feature of Pasolini’s artistic vision.
