Synopsis

The silent search for the sublime in painting

Mario Surbone belongs to the group of solitary artists who, moving autonomously from the lessons of Fontana and then of the “Azimuth” group, work not only on canvas but with the canvas. In his meditation on the essence of art, Surbone verified, as Nicolas De Staël commented, that “the space of the canvas is a wall, but all the birds of the world fly inside it”. He has dedicated his life and imagination to the search for the absolute; in other words, he has understood that the space of the painting itself, apparently circumscribed and closed, can become unlimited, revealing mysterious depths, suggesting distances, arriving at being itself matter, or better, anti-matter.
