Knowledge as a means of protecting historic installations and the values they embody

Artificial indoor lighting in the period starting in the late 17th and extending to the entire 18th century underwent profound changes, in keeping with changes in living quarters: to a certain degree, the Enlightenment or “century of lights”, a fitting expression that is mostly used figuratively, could well be a key for interpretation in a literal, material sense. The text aims to investigate the cultural and social roots, the design solutions, the lighting fixtures and their illuminating effects in private and public indoor spaces, as part of the increasingly strong spotlight that scholars shine on the knowledge and protection of historic installations and of the values they embody.
