Darkness and light, in the name of peace
In Prato, Umberto Mariani created a memorable installation on the theme of peace: a series of columns made of draped black fabric, raised just off the floor, allowing a bright light to shine through from below that illuminates phrases from the secular pacifist tradition written in relief letters on lead plates: ironic, bitter, and mournful, all marked by the illuminist thought to which the artist is devoted. The relationship between dark and light, the chiasmus generated between the columns, which by the dictates of tradition should be white, pure, solid, and eternal, and here instead they are black, unstable, and detached from the ground, is the protagonist of the installation, more a metaphor for perception and for the view of the world than an anthem to the benefits of peace.
