Synopsis

A mysterious, fascinating, tough, and uncompromising sculptress

Following Soutine and Chagall, disseminators of the multilingualism typical of Jewish communities before the rise of Nazism, this extraordinary sculptress appeared in Italy, and her career spanned seventy-five years of travel, encounters, danger, concealment, persistent research into the creative necessities, nostalgic evocations, and a tendency towards disquietude, analysis, and evocativeness. Of Lithuanian origins, Antonietta Raphaël arrived in Rome in 1925 as the companion of the well-known painter Mario Mafai. Her works were imbued with her personal culture: eccentric and anarchistic, anti-academic, restless and imaginative.
