Synopsis

Masterworks of Castelli maiolica from the 16th century to the third fire The town of Castelli in the Gran Sasso National Park was one of the most important centres of ceramic production thanks to a special type of clay that was particularly suitable for maiolica, and to a Benedictine monastery that introduced the pottery-making techniques. In the 17th and 18th century, the appreciation shown by the great European courts ensured that the quality of Castelli ceramics remained very high, and they are now held in the collections of the most important museums in the world, the Hermitage in particular. This book presents for the first time one of the largest and most important collections, begun in the early 20th century and still expanding.
