A large factory becomes a challenge for prominent artists

The former Hangar Bicocca factory in Milan has become a site of worldwide importance for contemporary art. The project originated from the decision to repurpose the huge Ansaldo industrial facility where the coils for electric motors for trains were manufactured, involving well-known artists willing to take on the challenge of a visually powerful and imposing space. It was not incidental that the first artist commissioned was Anselm Kiefer, who in September 2004 created the monumental site-specific work “The Seven Heavenly Palaces”.
