Synopsis

A newspaper that is unique in the world

“A truly unique newspaper”: this is how Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Pope Paul VI, defined L'Osservatore Romano in 1961 in an article about the extraordinary difficulty of producing the daily newspaper of the Holy See. “But, taking a closer look at things, these same difficulties give it so much dignity in its role as a periodical, so much authority and so much strength (...). In the Second World War, when the Italian press was gagged by ruthless censorship and imbued with artificial material, it then had a wonderful function (...), because it continued undaunted in its office as an honest and free provider? of information. L'Osservatore back then was essentially the same as it has always been: a beacon of guidance.” In the book, published by the Italian Embassy to the Holy See and by the Vatican newspaper itself, twelve contributions clarify some essential and peculiar aspects of a newspaper that is unique in the world.
