Drawings by a master of the Late Baroque in Bologna and Italy
Of the vast body of graphic work by Donato Creti, one of the most talented and successful draughtsmen of 18th-century Europe, and of his drawings (of “such beauty, and perfection”) that were sought after and collected throughout Europe, his first biographer, Giampietro Zanotti, wrote with particular enthusiasm and admiration in History of the Accademia Clementina (Bologna, 1739). Up till now, the confusion created by uncertain or erroneous attributions on more than a thousand works on paper held in public and private collections worldwide had discouraged any attempts at a general examination. Marco Riccomini has dedicated many years to verifying the drawings first-hand in the majority of the most important public and private collections in Europe and North America, resulting in this first and very useful catalogue raisonné.
