Synopsis

The rediscovery of a leading artist of the early 20th-century Venetian art scene

Emma Ciardi lived at the turn of the twentieth century when revolutions were transforming the world. She was the daughter and pupil of Guglielmo Ciardi, head of a Venetian movement that made the faithful depiction of reality its purpose. Emma studied the painting technique of Francesco Guardi and adopted the conventions of historic landscape painting. Unfazed by the changing artistic world around her and two centuries after Rosalba Carriera, she was successful also outside Italy and in America with her Venetian style, the lightness and personal flavour of her colour palette, which combine observation of reality and fantasy. With her old gardens, bright evocations of the eighteenth century, portraits of cities and radiant views of Venice, this book traces Ciardi’s poetic itinerary, with many unpublished works in private collections.
