Synopsis

The complete works of a “20th-century Caravaggio”

A very prolific painter in an artistic life that unfolds from the Abstract art of Kupka and Kandinsky to American Action Painting, from Spatialism to lyrical and surreal abstraction, Tancredi (Tancredi Parmeggiani) was the dramatic interpreter of the convulsive decades from the Forties to the Sixties, when painting forcefully reclaimed its own role alongside the emergence of new languages of art. For this book, the editors created order amongst more than 1300 oil, tempera, and gouache paintings. Critical and biographical essays and a documentary section with letters, photographs, handwritten pages, and macrophotographs of the painting drafts and of the artist's signature, reconstruct the tumultuous life of a “modern Caravaggio”, a nomad between Paris, Milan, Munch's Norway, and Rome, where in 1964, jumping into the Tiber, he ended his life.
